Currier Museum Family Day Celebrates The Making of a Book""
Boston Herald editorial cartoonist Jerry Holbert and bestselling author/artist David Macaulay will be special guests when the Currier Museum of Art, Manchester, NH, celebrates Family Day from 1-5p.m. on Saturday, May 30.
A guided tour of “The Making of a Book,” the exhibition featuring Macaulay’s work, is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. More than 100 manuscripts, drawings, and such artifacts as the dummies he uses to create his books are on display through June 14.
Reservations are required for Macaulay’s 2 p.m. program in the auditorium at which he will demonstrate how he illustrates his books. Afterwards, he will be available to sign books.
Macaulay, who earned a degree in architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design, simplifies complex ideas and objects by showing how are they are constructed. The Way Things Work, Black and White, and Cathedral are among his best-selling books. He has received numerous awards. In 2006, the “visual storyteller” was named a MacArthur fellow for his “elegant” and innovative approach to art, history, and science.
Family day is an opportunity for museum goers to participate in making art, including pottery, silk-screening a t-shirt to take home, and community weaving. They may also add their touches to a community mural and create monster cartoons with Jerry Holbert.
Holbert, who resides in NH, was graduated from the New York School of Visual Arts. Prior to becoming an editorial cartoonist, he was an animator for Walt Disney Productions in Orlando, FL. Among other publications, his work has appeared in the Washington Post, USA Today and educational textbooks.
Other highlights of the Family Day fundraiser to benefit the art center include Toe Jam Puppet Band at 3:30 p.m. and a silent auction for such prizes as original art, international travel, and tickets to the Red Sox. Auction winners will be announced on June 4.
Everyone is invited to celebrate the Art Center’s 70th birthday with cake at 4:30 p.m.
