OMB Audio: Wage Action Coalition Looks To Keep Momentum Going On Economic Democracy

Cambridge, MA – On Sunday’s “RADIO with a VIEW” program with Marc Stern and Dave Goodman, SEIU 1199 Vice president Enid Eckstein visited to discuss the upcoming Wage Action Events in Boston, Worcester, and Springfield, and economic inequality issues in general.

Inspired by recent events around the U.S., including the Seattle City Council vote to raise the minimum wage to fifteen dollars, demonstrations at the national shareholder meetings of Wal-Mart and McDonald’s and state efforts such as the Raise Up campaign in Massachusetts to increase the minimum wage and mandate paid sick leave, low wage workers will rally in the Commonwealth’s three largest cities on Thursday, June Twelfth.

In Boston’s Copley Square, demonstrators will be surrounded by office buildings and companies that employ thousands of middle class and professional workers in the fields of technology, real estate and finance. Enid Eckstein says improving job security and fairness should be a priority for these workers as well.

“I think there has been incredible job insecurity in that field [of finance]. I know, periodically in the Globe, there are pieces about State Street or other big companies laying off not 50, not 100, but 500. Offices moving to more favorable states in terms of business climate…so economic insecurity is everybody at this point in their lives.”
