Poll Observers Needed in Worcester Next Tuesday (9/20) - Immigrant Voters Under Attack!
Neighbor to Neighbor Massachusetts (N2N-MA) is requesting help with election observation during the Worcester municipal primary elections next week on Tuesday, September 20 and the general election on November 8. They are looking for volunteers to fill shifts throughout the day, to ensure that voter intimidation and suppression tactics do not prevent people from casting their ballots.
In Worcester, N2N-MA has been targeted by Tea Party activists who have falsely accused the group of voter fraud-- allegations which have been rejected by the Secretary of State and the Worcester Election Commission. Tea Party members have also pursued voter intimidation tactics, including arguing at a recent Election Commission hearing that people who don't speak English or are illiterate shouldn't be allowed to vote. During last fall's election the Tea Party placed individuals inside the polls who took photos of voters, and argued that volunteers shouldn't be allowed to provide translation.
N2N-MA is concerned that they will use the same tactics as last year to stop voter participation on Tuesday. They are looking for help to ensure that all Worcester voters have the opportunity to participate in the election.
Please contact Corey Kurtz at corey@n2nma.org for more information or if you are able to come to Worcester to be an observer. No experience is necessary and training will be provided by the National Lawyers Guild. Carpools or transportation from Boston are being coordinated.
