Boston Area Advocates Support Bid for Palestinian State at Harvard Square Rally

Cambridge, Mass. - Last Thursday, as Palestinian leadership pushed for recognition of an independent state at the United Nations, over 50 people attended a Harvard Square demonstration in support of that ongoing effort.

Marilyn Levin of the Boston United National Antiwar Coalition and United for Justice with Peace explained, "We, in Boston, felt it was important to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian's quest for sovereignty and self-determination at the UN. Our focus was to tell the Obama administration, 'Enough! Stop backing Israel in blocking international law and UN resolutions by using Security Council vetoes, providing Israel with weapons, giving apartheid Israel $10 million a day, and supporting ongoing colonial land theft and denial of human rights, including the right of return.' … We are heartened that the focus has shifted away from a futile and phony Oslo "peace process" to a strategy of winning international support through BDS and civil resistance."

"Shame on the US government for having used its Security Council veto 41 times to hold Israel above international law and deny Palestinians their rights,” agreed Nancy Murray of the Boston Coalition for Palestinian Rights. "We are demonstrating to urge the United States to change its one-sided policy on Israel-Palestine. And we are here to support the Palestinian leadership for saying enough to the Oslo 'peace process' which has over two decades bought Israel time to triple the number of its settlers in the West Bank. Since the US has proved anything but an ‘honest broker’ in negotiations, it is time for the world body to intercede and demand self-determination for the Palestinian people."

There were no counter-demonstrators at the event.
