Russ Davis MA Jobs with Justice on Labor and Social Activism and Prospects for 2009
Over the course of the last few years, peace and social justice organizations have engaged in an increasing number of collaborations with groups bridging a wide variety of issues and campaigns. From global climate change to job creation and workers rights to health care reform and protection from home foreclosures, community organizers increasingly view "justice" as a continuum of demands and strategies rather than single, isolated issues.
This multi-dimensional and ecumenical approach has led to the formation of such groups as Community Labor United and the Boston Green Justice Coalition, among others.
In an ongoing series of interviews, Open Media Boston and the Independent Broadcast Information Service engages activists and thought leaders in conversations about their agendas and tactics and prognoses for the future.
For fifteen years, RUSS DAVIS has served as Executive Director of Massachusetts Jobs with Justice. He sits on the national board of the organization as well. While working for General Electric in Lynn, MA, he was a leader of IEU-CWA Local 201.
In a conversation recorded on Friday, Jan. 16, 2009 and which can also be heard on "RADIO with a VIEW," Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009 on WMBR 88.1FM and www.wmbr.org between 10am and 12noon, the veteran labor activist talks about expanding union protection for workers (Employee Free Choice Act), health care financing reform (Medicare for All type measures), and looks ahead to labor and social activism in the context of an Obama presidency.
