Must See Film Requires Clear Mind and New Critique!

FOOD INC: A Must See Film. Viewing doesn't require a strong stomach; it does require a clear mind. Beautifully colorful cinematic illustrations of the industrialization of agriculture, the enormous investment in capital goods (factories, equipment, technology, infrastructure), and vast government subsidies for the cheapest, most unhealthy products. Shortcomings: Use of the phrase “increased efficiency” with no objective analysis or understanding of what that term means in an industrialized capitalist system.

BOSTON/North End - This month, the city of Boston invites art lovers to spend a long weekend in the North End experiencing the best of the Boston Arts Scene. Starting Friday, Sept. 11, the annual Boston Arts Festival will return to historic Christopher Columbus Park for a three-day celebration of local arts and entertainment. The event will feature work from over 60 visual artists and a number of scheduled musical and dance performances. The outdoor festivities will run each day from noon until 6 p.m.

CommonWealth: National Alliance for Media Arts and Culture To Host 2009 Conference in Boston

From August 26-29, the Boston branch of the National Alliance for Media Arts and Culture (NAMAC) will welcome hundreds of members from arts and media communities nationwide for its biennial national conference at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel. Founded in 1980, NAMAC is a nonprofit consortium of over 300 media, visual, and interdisciplinary arts organizations serving to support and advocate for the media arts. The conference, titled CommonWealth, will be co-hosted by the Center for Independent Documentary and other local media and arts-related organizations.

BOSTON/Jamaica Plain - In a time when new iPod models are released every few months, the ways in which we work, play, and express ourselves have become increasingly dependent on digital technology. It may be surprising that a group of twentysomethings can already feel nostalgic for the objects that marked their childhood, but the relentless rate of technological change means that once familiar products such as VHS tapes, cassettes, floppy disks, popular toys, and Polaroids have become antiquated in a relatively short period of time. Four local, young artists react to the rapid change of popular culture in their exhibit ICONOGRAPHIC: Analog Representations of Youth Culture in a Digital Age. The show opened last Thursday evening at JP Art Market, a gallery and studio run by artist Patti Hudson in Jamaica Plain.

BOSTON/Back Bay - My conversation Saturday with actress and comedienne Marla Gibbs and her daughter Angela Gibbs - actress, director, and producer - could have gone on for hours. But the two women, visiting Boston for the Roxbury Film Festival this weekend, were required to meet with festival organizers, and of course, see some movies.

Walking hand-in-hand along a New York street, the elderly couple seem unremarkable. He is stooped with age and uses a cane. She is still spry and gently helps him. Profiled in the prize-winning film, “Herb and Dorothy,” the Vogels look like a granny and a grampa - straight out of central casting.

Appearances are deceiving. Megumi Sasaki’s documentary reveals an extraordinary couple. The film screened earlier this year at the Jewish Film Festival and is now at the Landmark Theater, Kendall Square, Cambridge.

BOSTON/Fort Point - Since June 12, the Odysseus Project has been on display at the gallery Art @ 12 in Fort Point. The exhibit, featuring "work by artists and veteran-artists focusing on issues of war and the experience of veterans returning home," will run until July 25. The project is the vision of organizer and co-curator Anne Loyer, a film-maker and multimedia artist who wanted to offer artists a forum to creatively communicate their opinions and reactions to wartime experiences.

Dorkbot Meeting at Axiom Gallery Welcomes Artists Both Creative and Geeky

BOSTON/Jamaica Plain - On Tuesday June 30 from 7-9 pm, the Axiom Gallery in Jamaica Plain was practically overflowing with curious, creative “dorks” of the Boston community. It was the first time the experimental media venue had hosted a meeting for Dorkbot, an organization with the tagline “people doing strange things with electricity.” The evening’s proceedings included presentations by local artists Gideon Weisz, Brian Knep, and Leah Buechley, each willing to display and explain the products of his or her creative and scientific genius.

United Teen Equality Center to Host the Lowell Connector Event at the ICA

For the past decade, the United Teen Equality Center (UTEC) of Lowell has been changing – and sometimes even saving – the lives of the city’s youth, and they want you to know about it. In an effort to share their experiences at UTEC with the Boston community, dozens of the center’s teens will host the Lowell Connector Fundraiser Event on Tuesday, June 30 from 6:30-8:30 pm at the Institute for Contemporary Art.
