Boston Workers to March and Rally Against a Jobless Recovery

The Massachusetts jobless rate is now at 9.1 percent and rising. Workers are increasingly frustrated by the mentality of "corporate greed" that has taken over their employers and the failure of our politicians and policy makers to address the growing jobs crisis.

With the Massachusetts AFL-CIO, the Greater Boston Labor Council, Jobs with Justice and the support of over 75 union and community co-sponsors, thousands of workers will march and rally on Thursday, October 1, 2009 demanding that corporations be held accountable for the good jobs our communities need.

The mad scramble among cell phone companies for increased market share has already created much consumer confusion about the merits of various "calling plans." Now, thanks to a re-seller of mobile phone minutes called CREDO Mobile, the politics of which provider to choose has gotten muddled as well, for supporters of progressive causes.

I was raised, like most Irish-Catholics, not to speak ill of the dead—at least while the wake is still underway. Of course, the affliction known as “Irish Alzheimers” exerts a powerful tug in the opposite direction. Forgetting everything except the grudges keeps you focused on those parts of a departed politician’s legacy that won’t be highlighted from the pulpit or, in Ted Kennedy’s case, in fulsome obituaries run as front-page news stories, op-ed pieces, editorials, and internet encomia throughout the nation.

John Mackey struck a raw nerve when he decided to wade into the health care debate by using his status as a billionaire CEO (of Whole Foods) to broadcast his views via an Op-Ed piece in the The Wall Street Journal on August 11th 2009. He opened his piece with a quote from Margaret Thatcher implying socialism is parasitism. This lead-in set the tone for his views on health care. Among the opinions he aired in his Op-Ed piece was his assertion that no one has a right to health care any more than they have a right to food or shelter.

Supporters urging passage of the Employee Free Choice Act took to the streets on Monday to back warehouse workers at Rite Aid's massive distribution center in Lancaster, California. They released a new Jobs with Justice report about how management there has aggressively interfered in workers' freedom to form a union.

Chinese Progressive Association's Motion to Dismiss Sunshine Lawsuit Granted: Victory for Workers Rights Organizing

On Monday, August 3rd, a judge ruled in favor of the Chinese Progressive Association's (CPA) motion to dismiss Sunshine Travel's defamation lawsuit against them. The judge has agreed to dismiss all claims except for the claim regarding the unauthorized use of the trademark or logo. This is a tremendous victory for CPA and for all workers who want to organize to assert their legal rights!

A Green Justice Breakthrough in Massachusetts

The Massachusetts Green Justice Coalition won a victory for social justice and the environment on Tuesday when the state Energy Efficiency Advisory Council (EEAC) told the state’s utilities to add equity to their efficiency plans.

The EEAC must approve the utilities’ programs, which collect $210 million annually from Massachusetts ratepayers for building energy efficiency. < The Green Justice Coalition – 40 community, labor, environmental, and faith organizations statewide – brought 125 members to the July 14 EEAC meeting and urged the Council to insist upon:

Senate Votes to Cut F-22 Spending Bowing to Grassroots Pressure

Yesterday, Tuesday July 21st, the Senate voted, with a tally of 58-40, to cut $1.75 billion in wasteful spending on F-22 fighter jets from the Defense Authorization Bill. This is a significant victory and one which could not have been reached without the help of those who wrote, called, emailed and faxed their senators refusing to put this issue to rest. Even our own Senator Kerry, who was expected to vote for the spending had a surprising and welcome change of heart and ultimately voted for the McCain/Levin amendment to cut the F-22 funds.
