Could Single-Payer Health Care Proposals Arise from the Current Health Care Reform Debate Impasse?

As women’s health educators and advocates for nearly 4 decades (we are best known for the landmark book Our Bodies, Ourselves, which now appears in 24 foreign editions), Our Bodies Ourselves urges everyone to contact colleagues and friends whose Congressional representatives are Blue Dog Democrats currently blocking any meaningful health care reform legislation, including proposals that include a robust public health insurance option.

Cindy Sheehan: A “Class” Act

Gold Star Mother and nationally known peace activist, Cindy Sheehan, addressed a full house at the Regent Theatre in Arlington, Massachusetts in late June. In her plain speaking manner, she called attention to the fact that with the Obama administration it appears we have a “new coat of paint over the same old crap!” She stressed that hating one leader and adoring another misses the point that the whole system is the problem. Ours is a “class” system, she emphasized, and most people are getting poorer.

Harvard Takes Advantage of Weak Economy to Lay Off Employees and Restructure

I am employed by Harvard University in their Fine Arts Library as an image cataloguing assistant and on Tuesday June 23, 2009 I and two other people in the image cataloguing unit were laid off. Seven employees were cut from my library, 30 positions from Harvard College Library overall. This was our “contribution” to the 275 job eliminations, plus reductions in hours to approximately forty other positions that Harvard announced in an early morning email to all university staff on June 23.

On June 12, Rep. Edward Markey became the seventh member of the Massachusetts Congressional delegation to co-sponsor H.R. 676, the "Medicare for All" approach to health care reform written by Rep. John Conyers.

Rep. Markey joins Massachusetts Representatives Michael Capuano, William Delahunt, Barney Frank, James McGovern, John Olver and John Tierney and 75 other members of Congress as a co-sponsor of H.R. 676.

In Lynn, Massachusetts, our protest was another step in building the relationship between unionized working people and working-class community organizations, especially among immigrants. It’s a relationship that the North Shore Labor Council has been carefully nurturing for years.

White Supremacists to Hold Event Around Boston this Weekend

This Saturday, April 11th, a white supremacist event called “Patriot Action” is scheduled to take place in the Boston area. The event, which is a concert, speaking event and fundraiser, is expected to draw over one-hundred Nazis, Fascists and white supremacists from all over the country to the Boston area.

The group hosting the event is East Coast White Unity, a Chelsea-based group under the leadership of Scott Clark, a long time white power organizer in the Northeast.

Kerby Trevelus decapitated one of his sisters, stabbed another to death, and injured a third. Robert Stewart slaughtered eight people in a nursing home, and wounded another three. In the days leading up to the massacre of four police officers, Lovelle Mixon told relatives that he felt depressed and angry, an uncle noticing that he was emotionally withdrawn. Michael McLendon killed five family members and five other people before shooting himself. In the days leading up to the massacre, he told a friend that he was depressed. Tim Kretschmer murdered fifteen people before shooting himself.
